We get more questions about matching than about breeds. The right animal for you depends far more on your land, fences and time than on the picture you fell in love with. Here is how we think it through with families.
Start with your land
Measure the usable space — not the total property. Miniatures need at least a quarter-acre of rotated grazing per animal, with secure perimeter fencing of at least 1.2 m (4 ft) for goats and 1.4 m for alpacas.
How much time do you really have?
Be honest. Daily handling and observation is what keeps animals healthy. If weekends are your only time on-farm, low-input breeds like alpacas and donkeys suit you better than curious goats or herd-bound horses.
Why you are getting one
Companionship for a lonely horse? A friendly lawn-mower? A therapy-visit animal for the family? The ‘why’ changes what we recommend. A gentle Highland steer is ideal for the first; a pair of Pygmy goats for the second; nothing replaces a thoughtful, well-socialised donkey for the third.
