When you buy a calf from a 200-cow commercial operation, you get exactly what the operation was set up to produce. We are not a commercial operation, and we have no ambition to be one. We are a family farm, and our animals are raised as part of the family.
What ‘hand-raised’ means here
Every animal on the farm is handled twice a day from the first safe week of life. Halter training starts before weaning. They learn to lead, to load into a trailer, to stand quietly for the farrier and the vet. By the time they leave us they have been touched, talked to and trained by people.
Why that matters for you
A hand-raised animal settles into a new home in hours, not weeks. They lead willingly into the trailer. They are safer around children. They do not panic at unfamiliar sounds. That is the difference.
The cost of doing it slowly
We could double our herd tomorrow if we let mothers do the work and skipped daily handling. We won’t. The five or six well-socialised animals we raise each year are why families come back, and why the animals we place ten years ago are still loved family members.
