The trip home is the single biggest stress event in your animal’s transition. Done well, it is the calmest part of the day. Done badly, it can undo weeks of trust-building. Here is what we recommend.
Before you set off
Park the trailer in shade. Spread clean straw or shavings on the floor — non-slip footing is critical. Check that the divider is secure and that air flows from end to end. Fill a spill-proof water bucket and secure it.
Loading
Take your time. Five quiet minutes is faster than twenty noisy ones. Talk to them in the tone you used during handling. If they won’t load, back up, breathe, and try again. Never drag or shout.
The drive
Drive as if you have a sleeping baby in the vehicle next to you. No harsh braking, no fast corners, no loud music. Stop every hour to check water and that they are still standing calmly.
Arrival
Open the trailer into a small, secure paddock, not the big pasture. Let them walk out in their own time. Stay seated and quiet. Offer water and hay only — no grain yet.
